Sound Opinions Movie Night: Don't Look Back

CHICAGO (November 1, 2010) – The latest installment in the popular Sound Opinions at the Movies series will be D.A. Pennebaker’s 1967 rock documentary, Don’t Look Back, about the life and times of Bob Dylan in his prime, to be screened at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Avenue, Thursday evening, December 2 at 7:00pm. Chicago Public Media’s Sound Opinions, the world’s only rock and roll talk show,  is co-hosted by acclaimed pop music critics Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune and Jim DeRogatis of Vocalo.org.  Sound Opinions airs on more than 80 radio stations around the country.

Don’t Look Back trails Bob Dylan on his 1965 tour of the United Kingdom, performing and preparing for an artistic shift from an acoustic to electric style.  The film also features musicians Joan Baez, Donovan, Pete Edward “Ginger” Baker, Marianne Faithfull and Alan Price, with appearances by Allen Ginsberg and Dylan’s manager Albert Grossman.  The film opens with a famous scene featuring the song “Subterranean Homesick Blues” while Dylan holds up cue cards displaying the song’s lyrics.   The camera captures candid moments of Dylan’s arrogant yet enigmatic antics in placing himself on a pedestal over Donovan and Price.  Pennebaker also highlights the relationship between Dylan and Baez with a scene of the two singing together in a hotel room.  Baez sings a portion of “Love is Just a Four-Letter Word,” written by Dylan and eventually recorded by Baez in 1968.
